HOW TO EXPORT HIGH-QUALITY PRINT FILES

To ensure high-quality printing results, consider the following factors when exporting print files. These criteria apply to various common print products such as business cards, menus, envelopes, vouchers, flyers, and catalogs.

1. Convert to CMYK color mode immediately.
When designing a print product, convert your artwork to CMYK color mode immediately. CMYK is the standard color mode for printing, understood by commercial printers and offset printers. Using the RGB color mode will result in the printer being unable to accurately interpret the color blending for CMYK ink. This can lead to significant color discrepancies, causing the printed product to appear vastly different from your intended design. This is highly undesirable and emphasizes the importance of using CMYK color mode when exporting high-quality print files.

2. Adjust the resolution correctly when exporting files:
Incorrect resolution settings or using a low resolution are common causes of poor print quality at printing facilities.

If you design using vector-based software, you don't need to worry about this issue. Vector graphics are resolution-independent, meaning they can be scaled to any size without losing detail, as they are not dependent on pixel density settings like DPI.

However, if you design using raster-based software like Photoshop, it is important to pay attention to setting a minimum resolution of 300 dpi (dots per inch). Even for small designs like business cards, a resolution of at least 300 dpi is required to achieve high-quality printing. As the print size increases, the resolution should be increased accordingly. Setting a low resolution will result in blurry, pixelated, and distorted prints.

3. Design according to the print ratio.
A common issue at printing facilities is when customers design with incorrect sizes. Some customers design business cards that are several centimeters in size, which results in unnecessarily large file sizes and requires significant time for adjustments during printing. Therefore, when preparing files for printing, it is important to design using units such as mm, cm, dm, or m. Using pixel (px) dimensions can lead to confusion and incorrect sizing.

Ideally, the design should match the actual print size. For example, for business cards with a size of 8.8x5.3cm, the design file should reflect these dimensions accurately. In the case of large-format prints such as posters or standees, we can use ratios such as 1/2, 1/3, or 1/4. When you bring the files to the print shop, simply instruct them to scale the design according to the desired ratio. It's a straightforward process.

4. Include bleed in the design before exporting the print file:
A common mistake made by self-designing customers is not including bleed in their design files. If you're printing and cutting each piece individually, it may not be an issue. However, if you're printing hundreds or thousands of copies, there can be discrepancies between the trimmed pieces. Including bleed helps prevent issues such as white edges or missing text when the final product is cut.

5. Embed fonts and link images in the design file.
When sending your print file, make sure to embed fonts and link images. This ensures that the printer can accurately reproduce your intended content.

Some professional design software has features to embed fonts and link images. If your software doesn't have these functions, you can send a folder containing the fonts and images along with the design file to the printer.

These are important considerations and steps to export print files to meet the standards. We hope these tips will help you save time when working with printing facilities and achieve the highest-quality print products.
